|
Six teams entered into this event (set up to give Superleague teams/areas match practise), played at Cue Here, Airdrie on 13/10/07.
Cost to enter was £125 per team.
Total prize fund was £750 which was to be split £500 to the winners and £250 to the runners up.
The play-off final was to be determined by which two teams topped the group of all six teams combined.
The six teams entered into this were:-
MOTHERWELL B
GLASGOW C
GLASGOW B
MONKLANDS B
MONKLANDS A
EAST KILBRIDE
The format of the event was such that teams without 15 players drew numbers out a hat to determine which of the players played more than once per match. (this was brought in for a couple of reasons, but most importantly for teams whose players couldnt play all day...being late, or leaving early etc....) Each break in each match was lagged for!
The EK Team for this event was:-
A - Mark O'Brien Captain
B - Kevin Irving
C - Stevie Buchanan
D - Graeme Leggate
E - Davie MacKinnon
F - Ian McColl
G - Grant McNairn
H - Lee Miller
I - John Muir
J - John Purdie
K - Lindsay Robertson
L - Stuart Robertson
M - Arthur Russo
(Letters assigned to players will be used in the RECORDS later in this post)
Each Player paid £10 to enter, totalling £130. The extra £5 was given to Cue Here bar staff to add to their jar.
Match 1 V Motherwell B
We started well, going into a quick lead against Steven Browns Motherwell team, but at 6-3 up they pegged us back to level at 6-6 until we won the last three frames to win the match 9-6. A good solid effort by us in our opening match.

Match 2 V Glasgow C
Id decided, along with Kevin Irving, my co-captian, to go along with the same squad order, until such a time we lost a match, so, in match 2 we played the same order (of first 13), having won our first match. Once again we got off to a great start, and this time we were solid all the way through the match and ran out the match 11-4 which was a great effort by us, as that team 9/10 other times wed play them would have been much harder, but everything went our way during the game, be it luck, or the break of the ball. Thanks to Scott Grady, the team captain for his words of encouragement, both after the game, and again later on. much appreciated!

Match 3 V Monklands A
Monklands came out the blocks firing on all cylinders and raced into a 7-1 lead before we pegged three frames back to 7-4 down, but our comeback was shortlived, as Gary Ferguson won Monklands A their 8th frame and the match. The frames were played out, as per the rules, finishing 10-5 to Monklands A. Martin Holmes' Monklands A, now the favourites for the event, if they werent before!

Match 4 V Monklands B
This time we changed the play order, suspecting we needed "a win to stay in" and we got back on track early, making a good start through some solid play we took a 5-2 lead only to see that lead eradicate to face a 5-6 scoreline. We won the next two frames, to lead again, and needed one of the two frames in play to win the match. Fortunately for us, and not Alan Rennies Monklands B team, our player got very lucky out of a snooker to pot his last red and land perfect on the black. Final scoreline was 8-7 to us, with a sigh of relief as we ended up quite fortunate to win this match.

Match 5 V Glasgow B
With both teams needing to win to make the final, and with the event running a bit later than the estimated 7-30pm end of group stage 3 of our players, whod had already changed plans to stay longer, had to leave sharpish, and so they went on first 3. We won two of the first three, and two of the next three after that to take a 4-2 lead, which didnt last long. George Patons GLASGOW B team got it back to 4-4 and at this point it looked like the toss of a coin could decide the outcome. At this point though the match turned in our favour as we managed to rescue the 9th frame (Gerry Baldwin unlucky twice) and from there we never lost another frame in the match. The match was stopped once we reached 8 frames. End scorline 8-4, although the match was closer than that score may suggest.

The final EAST KILBRIDE V MONKLANDS
Two more of our players whod already rescheduled for us needed to go ASAP and so they played 1st and 2nd. This match was always going to be an uphill struggle for us, as Monklands are among the best areas in Scotland, and itd already showed earlier. We went 1-0 down, then 1-1. We lost the next 2 frames to trail 3-1, but won our next two frames to level the match at 3-3, but a couple of bad runs and moreso good play from "the Monklands" saw the match get away from us, with Martins side pulling away for a solid and well deserved 8-3 win. Well Done MONKLANDS A

Round Up
A very good day, and a great performance by our team. Ok, we didnt win, but we played well as a team, and only one team out of the other 5 did better than us on the day, so we can look back at a good day out, with a good end result, more experience, and hopefully even more confidence in doing well at future events like these.
The prizemoney was shared equally among the players!
A huge thank you to those who agreed to play, putting off arrangements to make it, and also rescheduling where they could other plans for later that evening when the event ran a bit later than most expected. Extra thanks to Stuart Robertson and Kevin Irving for help in organising and arranging in the lead up, and to Kevin for co-captaining on the day. 8)
